Clay bar decontamination removes contamination that bonds to paint and survives a normal wash — iron fallout, tar spots, tree sap and industrial grime. The contamination a wash leaves behind
Run your fingertips over a freshly washed panel inside a thin sandwich bag. If it feels gritty rather than glassy, the paint is carrying bonded contamination. Brake dust throws hot iron particles onto the bodywork, roads leave tar, and trees drop sap — all of which stick hard to the clear coat.
Left in place, this contamination dulls the finish, gives protection products nothing clean to bond to and, in the case of iron fallout, can leave tiny orange rust spots on lighter paint.
How the decontamination is done
It's a two-part process. Chemical removers dissolve what they can first, which means less needs to come off by hand. The clay then glides over lubricated paint and picks up whatever is still stuck to it.
- Iron fallout remover — reacts with and dissolves embedded brake dust
- Tar and glue remover for road tar spots, especially on lower panels
- Clay bar or clay mitt used on a lubricated surface, panel by panel
- Final rinse and dry, then the paint is ready for protection
When your car needs it
Clay decontamination is part of our deep clean, and it's the essential first step before machine polishing or a ceramic coating. Most cars benefit from it once or twice a year; cars parked under trees, near railway lines or driven on the A12 and A120 every day tend to pick up more.
Claying isn't needed on every wash. Done too often, or without enough lubricant, it can mar soft paint — so we only use it when the paint actually needs it.

How do I know if my car needs a clay bar treatment?
Put your hand in a thin plastic bag and run it over clean paint. If it feels rough or gritty, bonded contamination is there and a clay treatment will help.
Does clay bar decontamination scratch paint?
Not when it's done on well-lubricated, washed paint with light pressure. It can cause light marring on very soft paint, which a finishing polish removes.
