How to use a self-service car wash (jet wash bay guide)
Short answer
At a self-service car wash, start with the pre-wash or foam setting, then high-pressure soap top to bottom, then spot-free rinse — keeping the lance moving and at least 30cm from the paint. Bring a wash mitt and drying towel for the best results; the bay alone leaves the car wet and spotty.
What the settings mean
Most bays offer: pre-wash/foam (loosens dirt), high-pressure soap wash, rinse (often spot-free/deionised water), and sometimes wax. You pay for time, so know the order before you start feeding coins.
- Pre-wash / foam — spray on, let dwell briefly
- High-pressure wash — main cleaning pass, keep it moving
- Spot-free rinse — deionised water, reduces water spots
- Wax (optional) — a spray-on top-up, not a substitute for real wax
The right order
Rinse the car first to remove loose dirt, then foam or pre-wash and let it dwell, then the high-pressure soap pass from top to bottom, then a thorough rinse. Do the wheels with the lance during the soap stage — but do not blast wheel bearings or trim at point-blank range.
Keep the lance at least 30cm from the paint and keep it moving. Holding it close in one spot can damage paint, force water past seals, or chip stone-damaged areas.
Bring your own mitt and towel
The bay's brush — if it has one — has cleaned hundreds of cars and is full of grit. Skip it. Bring a microfibre wash mitt and use the foam setting as your shampoo, then dry with your own towel afterwards. This turns a mediocre bay wash into a genuinely good clean.
How long and how much
A maintenance wash takes 10–15 minutes of bay time; a thorough one with your own mitt, 20–30. It is pay-per-minute, so have your method planned before you start the clock.
Drying matters
Even spot-free rinse water benefits from a towel dry. Bays have no dryers — drive home and the car dries itself into water spots. A quick pass with a microfibre drying towel takes five minutes and transforms the result.
Common questions
How do you use a self-service car wash?
Pre-rinse, then foam or pre-wash, then high-pressure soap top to bottom, then spot-free rinse — keeping the lance at least 30cm from the paint and moving. Bring your own mitt and drying towel for the best result, and skip the bay's brush.
How do self car washes work?
You pay for time at a bay with a high-pressure lance offering pre-wash, soap, rinse and wax settings. You do the work yourself following the order above. It is cheaper than a full valet and gives you control over what touches your paint.
How much do self car washes cost?
They are pay-per-minute, so cost depends on how long you take — a quick maintenance wash is inexpensive, a thorough one costs more. Costs vary by site; check the price board before starting.
How do you dry a car after a self wash?
With a clean microfibre drying towel — bays have no dryers. Dry promptly after the final rinse to avoid water spots, even if you used the spot-free rinse setting.
